It's almost spring time and the beckoning call of fish are emanating from all the usual fishing spots. The calls are sub audible, similar to those of whales. You know, you can feel it deep within yourself but you can't quite put your finger on it or even describe the call. But never the less year after year the same thing occurs around this time of year. I call it "the calling". For centuries past, maybe even for several millenniums, this same event has been occurring. Your specific global location seams not to be a detriment to receiving "the calling". For that matter your status in life doesn't either. I have first hand knowledge about that. It's called the school of hard knocks and I should have a Ph.D. from all the courses I've taken there. This year the "calling" seems different then that of years past. It has a bigger following; or is it that just more people are hearing it? This can be evidenced by the visiting stores such as Dicks or the Sports Authority and seeing people milling around the fishing equipment department. It's almost funny seeing their faces browsing the shelves of hooks, lures, reels, line and poles. They don't really need any more stuff, they have enough, it's just the "calling" beckoning them and they don't know what they do. They come to the store in an attempt to ease the effects of the "calling". Recently, people have been confused between spring fever and the "the calling" phenomena. Although the two may be similar in many aspects, the deciding factors would include: 24/7 immersion in fishing catalogs, TV shows, equipment preparation etc. A true "calling" case could be described as a person so consumed by any aspect of fishing that he/she looses touch with reality as defined by others. topix.com |
